Touring the Costa Blanca? Consider Renting a Car

If you're planning a trip to the Costa Blanca in Spain then the best way to see this beautiful region is by car. Don't confine yourself to using taxis, busses and trains to get around. By renting a car you'll be able to come and go as you please and you'll be able to visit areas that aren't served by other forms of transportation. Here are some tips and considerations when renting a vehicle for touring the Costa Blanca.

If you'll be arriving by air then you'll probably be flying into the Alicante airport which serves the entire region. There are many car hire agencies at the Alicante airport including Avis, Europcar, Hertz and other Spanish agencies. This makes it convenient, especially if you'll be departing from the Alicante airport as well. There are also agencies in town that can be cheaper. They can be more convenient if you don't plan on renting a car right when you arrive. Most in-town rental companies have a drop off and pickup service to make it more convenient.

Renting a Car on a Budget

If you're traveling on a budget then don't think a car hire will be too expensive. If you're traveling with others then you can actually save money by renting. There are some ways to save money on car rental in Spain

Renting a small car will not only cost less but it will use less gas. Gas prices are much higher than in the U.S. so this can be a large part of your rental cost. Keep in mind that cars are smaller than in the U.S. so a compact in Spain will usually only transport two adults comfortably.

Also think about options and amenities that you can do without. Air conditioning is only necessary in the summer months so you can do without it the rest of the year. If you can drive a manual transmission then you don't have to rent an automatic. While insurance is necessary some credit cards insure you so it's important to check ahead of time.

Finding a Rental Car

Finding a rental car is made easy with the internet. There are online travel agencies (such as Expedia and Travelocity) that will show you rental prices and models that are available from various companies during the time you wish to rent. You can also use a travel agent which is great for one stop shopping; they can book everything including air and hotel.

You can also call rental agencies directly which may be able to advise you on specials that aren't available online. This is especially true with smaller local companies. These agencies will have bilingual staff to assist you.

To get the best price and the model of car you want it's best to reserve your car as far in advance as possible. This is especially important in the peak season when many agencies will be completely booked.
